Doctor-Prescribed Orthotics and Braces
At KNEEV Orthopaedic Centre in Jayanagar, South Bangalore, orthotics and bracing are prescribed only after proper medical evaluation. We assess your condition, determine if external support is indicated, and ensure correct fitting for optimal benefit.
Bracing is never a replacement for rehabilitation — it supports recovery when used appropriately.
Conditions That May Benefit from Orthotics and Bracing
Knee osteoarthritis with malalignment or instability
Post-operative knee and ankle support
Cervical pain with need for temporary immobilisation
Plantar fasciitis and foot alignment issues
Ligament injuries (ACL, MCL) during rehabilitation
Lumbar pain with postural instability
Ankle sprains and chronic ankle instability
Types of Orthotics and Braces
Knee Braces
Osteoarthritis (OA) Unloader Braces
Designed to shift load away from the affected compartment. Suitable for unicompartmental knee arthritis when conservative management is indicated.
Ligament Support Braces
Provide stability during rehabilitation of ACL, MCL, or PCL injuries. Used with physiotherapy, not as replacement.
Post-Injury and Post-Surgery Braces
Protect healing structures and limit range of motion as prescribed. Duration and type determined by clinical indication.
Spine Supports
Lumbar Support Belts
Provide external support during acute episodes or specific activities. Not intended for long-term continuous use.
Cervical Collars
Used for temporary immobilisation following injury or during acute pain. Duration strictly limited to prevent muscle weakness.
Ankle and Foot Orthotics
Ankle Braces
Support unstable ankles during sports or rehabilitation. Type depends on injury severity and activity demands.
Foot Orthotics
Custom or semi-custom insoles addressing biomechanical issues. Prescribed based on clinical and gait assessment.
Clinical note: Spine supports (lumbar belts, cervical collars) are used only under medical supervision with clear duration limits. Prolonged unsupervised use can lead to muscle deconditioning and dependency.
Our Clinical Approach
Medical Assessment Before Prescribing
Orthotics and braces are prescribed only after clinical evaluation confirms their appropriateness for your specific condition.
Integration with Physiotherapy
Bracing supports — but does not replace — rehabilitation. We coordinate with physiotherapy for comprehensive care.
Correct Sizing and Fitting
Proper fit is essential for effectiveness. We ensure appropriate sizing and adjustment before dispensing.
Education on Duration and Avoidance of Dependency
Clear guidance on when to wear, when to wean, and exercises to maintain muscle strength during brace use.
When Bracing Alone Is Not Sufficient
Orthotics and bracing have limitations. We will clearly communicate when external support alone cannot adequately address your condition:
Significant joint instability requiring surgical stabilisation
Progressive deformity not controllable with external support
Neurological deficits requiring urgent intervention
Conditions where bracing may delay necessary treatment
In such cases, we discuss appropriate alternatives including further evaluation or referral for specialist care.
